Carbon Monoxide is colourless, odourless and tasteless and almost impossible to identify without a detector. Department of Health-funded study found almost a fifth of private UK homes had Carbon Monoxide levels higher than World Health Organisation health levels.

It is produced by incomplete combustion of fossil fuels – gas, oil, coal and wood used in boilers, engines, gas fires, water heaters and open fires. Combustion problems are caused by poor installation or maintenance and poorly ventilated rooms.
